Request for more significant Leviathan lore/encounters
In the current state of the game the leviathan feels more akin to a friendly stray animal after the first handful of encounters than a threat we should avoid, potentially adding the chance for it to be hostile, some story surrounding the creature or maybe a way to "tame" it could add more depth to an otherwise less significant background character

I was hoping that collecting multiple shells of the same leviathan built the egg to completion, like a jigsaw, I also like Ablewind's above as well -

AblewindThe recent update did add lore which suggests that the leviathans can be "hunted".
Perhaps some manner of a ship module which:
A) starts out as a "storm anchor". You "shoot" a hook/spike into a building which helps keep you from drifting but also "semi-grounds" (reduces but not fully eliminates) your ship from lightning damage.
Then with an upgrade.
B) Becomes something of a "Harpoon" that you can shoot at the leviathans as a means to "catch" them and then hunt them.
Model this tech off of the deck extractor.
C) Once you have "caught" a leviathan? Treat it kinda like a giant centipede encounter? It ( the leviathan ) doesn't move. But it can attack/spit at you like the praying mantises do.
But you have only so much time to attack it with a crossbow and your bolts, charged bolts, and poison bolts to kill/defeat it before it "shakes off" the Harpoon and "gets away".
If it "escapes" you have to rebuild the Harpoon Gun (basically have it get ripped off) as the price of failure. -

Ablewind::Building off my prior comment::
Being able to hunt leviathans, means the possibility of:
A. Trophies that are placeable/mountable. You already have the model in game of the leviathan head that may be easy to tweak/adjust be made into a placeable/moveable item for an airship interior.
B. New organic, chemical, liquid, substances for crafting, painting, upgrades, gardening, and more.
C. If I wasn't clear in the earlier comment? Make the leviathan hunt similar to how when the scrapwings spawn to attack that it pulls up out of the dust cloud ( Leviathan Hunting MUST BE no higher than 230 elevation! ) and the harpoon line is just part of the animation after "successfully harpooning it".
Make this a TIMED EVENT. The leviathan doesn't attack the players or the ship directly but with something like the mantis acid/poison/corrosive spit.
Players have to attack the leviathan with crossbows. Maybe different leviathans in different regions have different attack types and weaknesses. -

robdunfAn alternative to Ablewinds fights - 3 leviathans, each fight is different.
Dust Circling Leviathan - This fight is from the ship. Stays in the dust and you have to keep hitting it with crossbow bolts, every X number of direct hits it strikes with an acid spit you have dodge as much as possible and repair the ship from continuous corrosive damage.
Caged Leviathan - The leviathan hasn't left the cavern. Sperlunking anyone? This one is timed, you have to prevent it from leaving the cave by extracting the ledges it clings to and hit with charged bolts. Its attack's cause debris to fall from the ceiling. If it escapes there is massive damage to you and the ship.
Glowing Crystal Leviathan - Its moves quick traps you in a cage like platform. This leviathan uses Glow Crystals to energise itself and attack the player with shock attacks, causing damage to you, and your extractor to lose all charges. You can extract the crystals to prevent attacks, but have to kill it with corrosive bolts. -

robdunf1000 Characters seems a lot but...
The above fights have their difficulty matched by the number of players playing, and the difficulty level set in game. These fights should really push the player to upgrade the personal extractor, and for the Caged Leviathan use land chargesTha.
I do think there needs to be a reason to kill them, not just hunting them for sport. Specifically required rare items for game progression.
Scanning the bodies afterwards allows for an idea I put in June last year, that I have seen a couple of times by others... HOLOGRAPHIC ORNAMENTS (there's 3 of them to merge to be fair.. search "holog")
Here's my suggestion on the subject - https://forever-skies.featureupvote.com/suggestions/561503/holographicglass-cased-items
