Quest instructions upon killing first mantis

When I first entered the Dust on foot via one of the nature towers, I killed a mantis and grabbed its chitin armor, at which point the quest IMMEDIATELY changed into "Fly away from the tower" (paraphrased). In actuality, I had to go back in and progress further and grab a couple more things, otherwise I could not progress the plot. This felt particularly deceiving (of course, it wasn't).
