Additional mini game in the Virus Sample analyzer (VSA).
Additions to how player is interacting with VSA.
When player brings contagious sample to the VSA, they have to evaluate the concentration of virus in the sample via cytologic evaluation.
Player is presented with image of the sample with certain areas highlighted with bright colors where the concentration of virus is the highest.
Then player have to pinpoint the exact location of those peaks or outline the areas (see attached file). Then VSA extracts those high concentration areas.
Amount of extracted material is measured and if it's above some arbitrary threshold, player can procced to the next step which is minigame that VSU has right now.
If amount of exctracted material is below that threshold, exctracted material is "stored" in VSA and player have to find another sample and repeat the first step again until enough material is extracted.
This approach will depict research process more accurately as it's more trial and error when dealing with something unknown.

I like this idea, here an option that might fit in the game:
Virus Sample Analyser provides:
- Base cultures for gastro, haemo, and respiro cures.
- Small sample cultures of advanced versions of above and cerebro cures
- Smaller samples of unknown viruses (mutated versions of above) and grey plague.
Cultivation\Extraction Unit:
- You cultivate small and smaller samples. Growth times similar to plants\moths, requiring liquids/base solutions (BS) for different cultivation's. Using the wrong BS destroys the sample or creates waste. Similar to adding the right fertilizer to plants.
- You have to extract enough of the virus for advanced analysis. This can be gamified similar to the VSA game, including Ramiel's idea.
Advanced Virus Sample Analyser:
- For mutated\advanced viruses you provide multiple samples or cultivated versions.
- Unknown viruses require a full cultivated sample from the cultivation unit. -
